A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Doyin Okupe, the campaign director general of Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, of money laundering charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Okupe, a former senior special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was convicted for breaching the Money Laundering Act.
In a judgment on Monday, December 19, 2022, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16(1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act for accepting cash payments without going through the financial institution above the threshold allowed under the Act.
The EFCC had arraigned Okupe in 2019 on a 59-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of N702 million.
Okupe was arraigned alongside two companies – Value Trust Investment Ltd and Abrahams Telecoms Ltd.
