A South African judge has sentenced Olympian Oscar Pistorius to five years in jail for the shooting death of model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, Tuesday, October 21, 2014 in Pretoria.
He has been sentenced for three years for unlawfully firing a gun in a public place. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Judge Thokozile Masipa had found the double-amputee athlete who is popularly called the Blade Runner, not guilty of murder and 2nd degree murder. She found him guilty of culpable homicide on September 12, 2014.
Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Steenkamp in the morning of Valentine’s Day in 2013 in his home.
The couple had been dating for three months prior to the shooting. He said he mistook her for an intruder, while the prosecution said he killed her intentionally after an argument.
Steenkamp’s family was in the room when the sentence was delivered.
