What could be the first case of a patient with the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been reported in Kaduna State.
The patient, 19-year-old student of Law at the Ahmadu Bello University has been is at the university’s teaching hospital in the prominent Northern town of Zaria on admission for over a week and only began to show Ebola-like symptoms on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
Public Relations Officer, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, ABUTH, Bilyaminu Umar, confirmed the report to The Cable.
“Yes, there was a case of a suspected Ebola patient. He is with the Faculty of Law, ABU, Zaria and will be placed on isolation. I am out of town, but will confirm details on my return from a trip.”
However, the state’s Commission of Health, Dr. Thot Dogo, said the student said the blood sample of the patient had been sent to a laboratory in Lagos for tests, and the outcome, to be revealed on Tuesday, will determine the next line of action.
However, the ministry of health ruled out any chance that the student”s illness is down to Ebola.
“The Kaduna report is totally untrue,” Dan Nwomeh, a spokesman for Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu has said. “In fact, ABUTH has no lab that can diagnose Ebola as reported.”
