Former Ajax footballer Jerge Hoefdraad remains in a critical condition and is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head following his attempt to break up an argument at a party in Amsterdam.
It was wrongly reported in Holland on Monday that Hoefdraad, 35, had died after sustaining serious injuries, but the police have now confirmed that the initial statement was incorrect.
Instead, Hoefdraad, who played at Ajax as a youngster alongside Ryan Babel, is in hospital – with police apologising to his family.
A statement from the police in Amsterdam said: ‘To our regret, the message was incorrectly reported this afternoon of the death of the 35-year-old victim of the shooting incident on Stekkenbergweg.
‘He is in a very critical condition in hospital. We deeply regret this and apologize to his family.’
