A former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, October 7, 2018 emerged as presidential candidate of the leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a historic presidential primary held in the oil rich city of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
This would be the first time Atiku is winning the PDP presidential ticket and flying the banner of the party as a presidential candidate.
Atiku polled 1,532 votes to defeat his closest rival, Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal who polled 693 votes.
Tambuwal, was believed to have the backing of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki came a distant third with 317 votes. Senator Musa Kwankwaso came fourth with 158 votes while Gombe State Governor Ibrahim came fifth with 111 votes.
Atiku will now face incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari at Nigeria’s mother of all political battles, the 2019 presidential polls.
