An earthquake has struck southern England jolted people in their beds and sent houses shaking.
According to the British Geological Survey (BGS) quake maps, the epicentre was in 3km northwest of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, and recorded at a depth of 10km.
People reported feeling the 3.3 magnitude tremor strike at 9.45am in parts of London on Tuesday morning.
Leighton Buzzard resident Stephen Bennett told Mirror Online: “It was odd. It felt like a double impact. Like something had hit our house.
“There was a double thud and the house rattled, it was over in less than a second.”
The BGS said one report from a resident who felt the shaking suggested the earthquake was like a “large explosion”.
The size of the tremor was initially thought to be larger, but it has since been downgraded from initial reports stating that it was a 3.9 magnitude shake.
One person who reported feeling the jolt in Leighton Buzzard wrote on the The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s (EMSC) site: “It felt horrible. The whole house was shaking as if something huge and very heavy hit the roof or my neighbours’ house (they’re end of terrace).

“I never suspected we’d have it in here.”
However, another person in Milton Keynes enjoyed the quake, writing: “I felt it very clearly. The first wave shook the house a bit and then some little vibrations during 5 seconds.
“But my wife, at home with me, did not feel anything.. Nice experience!”
A tweet from BGS said it was receiving many notifications of shaking from the heavily-populated area around Leighton Buzzard and Luton, where one of the UK’s key airports is based.
Its tweet said: “Reports include ‘like a convey of HGVs driving past my front door at great speed’, ‘the house had one dramatic shake’, ‘felt like whole house was shaking’ & ‘it was like a large explosion’.”
The EMSC reported the shaking was concentrated about 12km southeast of Milton Keynes.
