Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for COVID-19.
He made the announcement on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 saying the COVID-19 test he took on Monday ‘came back positive’.
Bolsonaro explained that he had developed symptoms of the virus on Sunday, including a high temperature.
The president has said he has cancelled a planned trip to the state of Bahia and is currently is self-isolating.
He added that he is taking the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin.
The president was previously accused of dismissing the threat of Covid-19, after he described the virus as a ‘little flu’ in April. At the time, he said he wasn’t worried about being infected as ‘I wouldn’t feel anything, at most it would be like a little flue or a little cold’.
