Boko Haram: Nigerian Government Resumes Trial of Over 300 Terrorism Suspects

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has resumed the trial of more than 300 individuals arrested in connection with terrorism – involvement with Boko Haram – and other criminal activities.

According to the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), these trials are being conducted in accordance with international criminal justice standards.

Five Federal High Courts oversee the trials, which are supervised by the NCTC under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

Michael Abu, Head of Strategic Communication for the NCTC-ONSA, emphasised the government’s dedication to social justice in a statement made known to the press on Wednesday, July 25, 2024.

“The resumption of these trials underscores our commitment to social justice and transparent administration,” Abu stated.

The trial process is a coordinated effort involving the Complex Casework Group (CCG) from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, alongside other key stakeholders, under the supervision of the NCTC-ONSA.

Five reputable judges are presiding over the cases in five specially established courts and chambers designed for the swift administration of justice.

“More than 800 case files have been reviewed, and charges drafted to ensure efficient prosecution and appropriate justice,” Abu noted, highlighting the thorough preparation undertaken to ensure fair trials.

This renewed judicial effort follows previous initiatives between 2017 and 2018, which resulted in 163 convictions, 882 discharges, and five acquittals.

The involvement of multiple stakeholders, including CCG prosecutors and defense counsel from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON), ensures a balanced and comprehensive legal process.

In addition to the trials, the NCTC-ONSA is working on the deradicalization and rehabilitation of suspects found not culpable.

These individuals are being engaged in profitable ventures as part of their reintegration into society.

“The NCTC-ONSA is collaborating with relevant authorities to fulfill its mandates and support the administration’s efforts towards good governance and a just society,” Abu added.

This large-scale judicial initiative is a critical component of Nigeria’s broader strategy to address terrorism and related crimes. It aims to reinforce the rule of law and ensure national security.
