WHO Declares Global Health Emergency

The outbreak of the new coronavirus was declared a global public health emergency on Thursday, January 30, 2020 by the World Health Organization.

And a growing number of countries are reporting limited person-to-person spread of the virus.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, said the declaration is not a “vote of no confidence” in China, which has been widely praised for its transparency and work to control the outbreak.

Instead, Tedros said the WHO was acting to protect countries with weaker health systems.

Six cases have been diagnosed in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the first case of person-to-person transmission in the U.S. on Thursday, between a husband and wife in Chicago.
