WASHINGTON, DC, USA – President Joe Biden welcomed President-elect Donald Trump to the White House on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, marking a return to the traditional, peaceful transfer of power.
The meeting in the Oval Office symbolised a smooth transition from Democrat to Republican, a custom Trump declined to follow during the previous handover four years ago.
Biden and Trump greeted each other with a handshake before the cameras.
As reporters filled the room, Biden congratulated Trump, acknowledging the demanding nature of politics.
In response, Trump noted that while “politics is tough” and “not always a nice world,” today felt like an exception.
The atmosphere was civil but guarded, and both leaders pledged to ensure a seamless transition.
However, reporters’ questions on topics like Ukraine and democracy went unanswered as they were quickly ushered out of the room.
First Lady Jill Biden also joined her husband in welcoming Trump, presenting him with a handwritten note for Melania Trump, expressing readiness to assist the incoming first lady with the transition.
Melania did not accompany her husband to the White House, breaking with the tradition of first ladies meeting face-to-face.
Jill Biden’s letter, however, extended a collaborative spirit, with the White House confirming her team’s commitment to supporting a smooth handover.
Meanwhile, Trump has continued to build his incoming administration, announcing several high-profile appointments.
Trump’s return to Washington was met with elation among his allies in Congress, particularly as he spoke to House Republicans, many of whom were energised by his support.
During a morning meeting, Trump threw his weight behind Speaker Mike Johnson, who now embarks on a campaign to solidify his leadership in the House.
In a private remark, Johnson praised Trump as the “comeback king,” highlighting the new administration’s momentum.
Among those gathered was tech billionaire Elon Musk, whose presence captured the attention of numerous lawmakers. Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) described Musk as the “center of attention,” noting that Trump gave Musk “the biggest support” during his remarks.
Musk, who received three standing ovations, drew admiration from House members for his influence and potential role in the administration’s policies.
Trump’s transition team has also ramped up fundraising efforts, with an email sent to supporters during the White House visit.
Titled “Trump is inside the White House,” the message called on supporters to participate in an online poll on Trump’s policy priorities.
With House control still undecided, as races in several districts remain too close to call, Republicans are hopeful the shift in leadership will consolidate their influence in Congress.
GOP senators, too, met privately to decide on a successor for Mitch McConnell, who has led the Senate for over a decade.
