WASHINGTON, DC, USA – As concerns over the H5N1 bird flu and its potential impact grow, the Biden administration announced on Friday, January 3, 2025, an increased allocation of more than $300 million to bolster monitoring and preparedness efforts across the United States.
To date, 66 confirmed human cases of H5N1 have been reported across 10 states, with California and Colorado experiencing the highest numbers.
A single severe case in Louisiana has drawn significant attention after the virus likely mutated within the patient.
However, health officials emphasise that there has been no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus.
Funding Breakdown and Focus Areas
The newly allocated funds are intended to enhance the nation’s readiness and monitoring capabilities.
- Testing and Surveillance: Approximately $100 million will be dedicated to testing, outreach to high-risk populations, and monitoring individuals who have been exposed to infected animals.
- Hospital Preparedness: $90 million will go to the Hospital Preparedness Program, the federal government’s primary source of funding for health care system readiness.
- Regional and Local Preparedness: Additional funding will support state and local health departments in their efforts to respond effectively to potential outbreaks.
Administration’s Commitment
Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra stressed the importance of proactive measures, even as the risk to humans remains low.
“While the risk to humans remains low, we are always preparing for any possible scenario that could arise. These investments are critical to continuing our disease surveillance, laboratory testing, and monitoring efforts alongside our partners at USDA,” Becerra said.
“Preparedness is the key to keeping Americans healthy and our country safe. We will continue to ensure our response is strong, well-equipped, and ready for whatever is needed.”
