The Biafra Nations Youth League, BNYL, has insisted that former military head of state, Yakubu Gowon declared war on people of the Southeast.
BNYL explained that “Gowon’s failure to implement the Aburi Accord and refusal to stop the killing of people from the South-east led to the Biafra war.”
Princewill Chimezie Richard, the group’s national leader, made the remark in a message he signed and made available to journalists on Sunday, May 31, 2020, to mark this year’s Biafra Day celebration.
Richard also debunked claim that the first coup was an Igbo coup adding that “history has it that there are other active participants in that coup that was not Igbo even though the person who led and executed the coup was a Delta State-born Chukwuma Nzeogwu”.
He recalled the role played by the non-Igbo people in the war.
BNYL also called on Southeast and South-south Governors to immortalize former Biafra warlord, Late Philip Effiong for his role in ending the war.
The group recalled that it was Effiong who summoned courage when Ojukwu fled to exile and announced a ceasefire to end the sufferings of the people.
“He deserves honor in our states”, BNYL said.
