Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, on Monday, September 17, 2018, revealed that he and other members of the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, betrayed former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general election.
Speaking on a personal note, he said his heart was with President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 polls, but owing to public ridicule and fear of being accused as anti-partisan, he could not openly align with Buhari then.
The immediate past Senate Minority leader stated this when he led elders and leaders of the All Progressive Congress, APC, on a courtesy visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Akpabio who recently defected to the ruling APC, also alleged that throughout the 16 years reign of the PDP at the federal level, not a single federal road project was executed.
He also boasted that Akwa Ibom will be the first state from the South-South where the APC will emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections.
According to him, even though PDP currently controls the state, the party was dead and a mere carcass, noting that the body and soul of the party had decamped to the APC.
He also told the President that over 260,000 new members have registered with the APC, following his defection, adding that the number was bound to rise again.
He assured the President not to be perturbed over the gale of defections to the opposition PDP, as no single indigene of the South-South will vote against him in 2019 because of the infrastructural developments he had attracted to the region.
While attending a caucus meeting of the APC, recently, Akpabio said part of the reasons he decided to join the party was to help President Buhari fight the twin issues of corruption and poverty.
