Makurdi, Nigeria – A Tiv socio-cultural organization, the Ayatutu Youth Vanguard, is pushing for merit-based selection over ethno-political considerations in the nomination of a Minister to represent Benue state.
This demand comes amidst speculations surrounding the potential candidacy of a Tiv man, Emmanuel Jime.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 9, 2023, by the National Coordinator of the Ayatutu Youth Vanguard, Tyongi Aondongu, the group categorically rejected the notion that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s choice should be limited by the previous positions held by individuals from the state.
“The discourse revolving around the ethnic background of the potential Minister is an unnecessary distraction,” the statement read.
It cited past instances where David Mark and Abba Moro, both from the Idoma ethnic group, held top positions under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The group dismissed the idea of constitutional barriers to such appointments and urged the public to shift their focus to President Tinubu’s ability to identify and appoint competent individuals for national service.
The Ayatutu Youth Vanguard also warned against using the situation to sow discord among Benue State’s political elites and tribes that have long coexisted harmoniously.
It further argued for fair recognition of the Tiv people’s overwhelming support for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The group urged Nigerians to support the policies of President Tinubu’s administration and asserted that he has no intention of marginalising any group based on their political leanings.
“We emphasise the imperative of selecting candidates for national service solely on the grounds of merit, transcending religious and tribal affiliation,” the statement concluded.
