Parents in Enid, Oklahoma were arrested last week after police say their infant daughter was found not breathing and covered in lice, feces and dirt.
Mark Cannon, 45, and Jennifer Cannon, 26, were accused of child neglect in the death of 6-week-old Cadence Connor, but they have not formally been charged, according to KOCO.
The Cannons allegedly told officers that they got into a drunken argument and left their home separately. Mark Cannon said when he returned around dawn Wednesday morning, he fed Cadence and put her to bed, but when he checked on her six and a half hours later, she was not breathing.
The girl’s aunt was the one to call 911. It’s unclear when the aunt arrived at the home.
Paramedics were unable to resuscitate Cadence, News 9 reported. Investigators said the girl appeared to have been neglected for a long period of time.
“Dirt in the toenails, fecal matter on the body, and untreated diaper rash along with lice, Enid Police Captain Jack Morris said, according to Dreamin’ Demon.
The baby’s aunt told KOCO that Jennifer Cannon did nothing wrong and that Cadence “was a happy baby.”
An autopsy to determine the cause of death is underway.
