Children have a natural capacity to see the silver lining behind every dark cloud. The case of three year old Penny Smith and four year old Ava Garcia isn’t much different from that of children world over who are incapable of closing up their warm and precious hearts.
The two children have become inseparable since arriving at Texas Children Hospital. The pair go through the process of chemotherapy treatments together and have long learnt how to make the otherwise emotional and physically draining process ‘fun’.
According to ABC News, Cindy Sagan, Penny’s mother said: “It was like a play-date. Even though she was getting chemo, she was getting poked, it was stressful. It was easy going [to the hospital] knowing she was having fun.”
“They are best friends through tragedy but they found each other and they’re going to hold on to each other for as long as possible,” she said.
Christina Garcia, mother of four year old Ava added: “It just made her more comfortable. She wasn’t scared because she looked like her. Penny got to enjoy having a best friend. Ava got to enjoy that and Penny will forever be in our hearts and we will always remember her.”
While hoping that the girls could celebrate remission together, however, the parents of both girls don’t know just how much time their children had left even as Penny’s health has deteriorated. Ava’s parents have set up a Go Fund Me page for her.
