Austria Joins International Chorus, Bans TikTok on Federal Employees’ Work Devices

Must read

AUSTRIA – In a move reflecting growing international unease, Austria announced on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, it will prohibit the use of TikTok, the Chinese-owned social media app, on federal employees’ work phones.

The decision highlights escalating concerns about the potential for misuse of data by foreign powers.

The decision, which follows recommendations from Austria’s intelligence agencies and expert advisors from several ministries, places Austria in the company of a growing number of Western nations taking similar measures.

Recently, the United States, Britain, Australia, France, the Netherlands, and the European Commission have all implemented restrictions on the platform.

“The federal government has decided to ban the private use and installation of TikTok on work devices of federal employees,” the Austrian interior ministry declared in a statement.

The ministry went on to explain that the removal of the app is aimed at “eliminating potential access to government information as much as possible,” though it did not provide a timeline for when this measure would come into effect.

The ban will only affect work-related devices. Private devices used by federal employees will not be subject to the prohibition.

TikTok, a platform that allows users to share short, viral videos, has seen explosive global growth, boasting over one billion users worldwide.

However, its popularity has been shadowed by security concerns, stemming primarily from a 2017 Chinese law mandating local companies to surrender personal data if deemed relevant to national security.

Beijing has consistently refuted suggestions that these data policies pose a threat to ordinary users. Despite these reassurances, Western governments appear increasingly cautious about the potential risks associated with Chinese-owned technology companies.

These bans represent a significant pushback against the rapid global expansion of Chinese technology firms, marking a new front in the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the West and China. As more countries implement similar restrictions, the future of global tech operations — and the delicate balance of power — hangs in the balance.
