The Yobe State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has concluded plans to embark on a two-week warning strike with effect from 8th June, 2021 to press home its demand.
This was contained in a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor titled, “Notice Of Local Strike Action”, dated 25th May, 2021 signed by the Branch Chairperson, Barrister Mohammed Saje Jajere, on behalf of the Union.
Part of the letter read: “Sequel to the congress meeting held on 25th May 2021, I wish to inform you that, the congress has resolved and directed its members to embark on two weeks warning strike with effect from Tuesday 8th June, 2021 if its demands as contained in the earlier resolution dated 18th January 2021 and 18th February 2021.
“In view of this, the management is hereby formally notified of the development”.
It was gathered that part of the Union’s grievance was the inability of the state government to pay their Earned Academic Allowances, EAA.
However, during the maiden ministerial press briefing organized the NUJ Yobe State Council recently to mark Governor Buni’s two years in office, the State Commissioner of Higher Education, Prof. Mohammed Munkaila announced that the Earn Academic Allowances for the State University Academic Staff has been approved and is awaiting cash backing.
Public affairs commentators are of the view that the move by ASUU in the state university is a wakeup call to authorities concerned to expedite action in fulfilling their own side of the bargain.
