ABUJA, Nigeria – The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, has announced a substantial increase of 114% in the salaries of elected politicians and public office holders, including the President, vice president, governors, and lawmakers.
The RMAFC, which determines the remuneration for political office holders, called upon the 36 states’ Houses of Assembly to expedite amending relevant laws to accommodate the salary adjustments for political, judicial, and public officials.
The announcement was made by RMAFC Chairman, Muhammadu Shehu, represented by federal commissioner Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, during the presentation of reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State governor, Dr Nasir Idris, in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
The salary revision, effective from January 1, 2023, comes in compliance with the provision of paragraph 32(d) of part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 constitution of the federal government (as amended).
The previous remuneration review was conducted in 2007.
Shehu explained that the remuneration adjustments were guided by principles such as equity and fairness, risk and responsibilities, national order of precedence, motivation, and tenure of office.
The reviews took into consideration both subjective inputs from stakeholders and objective analysis of macro-economic variables, especially the Consumer Price Index, CPI.
For judicial office holders, the commission has proposed the introduction of three new allowances, including Professional Development Assistant to provide two law clerks for all judicial officers, Long Service Allowance to acknowledge hierarchy, and Restricted or Forced Lifestyle allowance to compensate for the lifestyle restrictions of active service.
