On the morning of Saturday March 19, 2016, Citizen Juliet Kobani, a Youth Corper, set out to perform her duty as an electoral officer in Ward 6, Isaka, of Okrika Local Government Area.
Little did she know that it was going to be a day she would both escape death and be betrayed by the Nigerian military.
On her arrival at ATC, jetty, Okrika, she and her colleagues were boarded on boat that rather than went to Isaka, Ward 6, where the election was to hold, was diverted to an unknown Creek, and under the cover of military protection by a gun boat, stalwarts of the APC forced her and her colleagues to thumbprint the ballot papers for the Party.
Her refusal to authenticate the results with her signature attracted severe beatings from the APC members who threatened to rape and kill her.
Citizen Juliet Kobani only managed to survive the ordeal when an unnamed army officer said her death was not part of the plan. Citizen Juliet is severely battered and currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed location.
Her assailants are not unknown. They must be caught and brought to justice. Everyone who took part in the plot to scuttle democracy in Ward 6, Okrika, including Mrs. Maureen Tamuno, the APC House of Reps Candidate, who was in touch with the assailants during the ordeal, must face the law.
No one would have conceived that in this era and time, when more and more nations are embracing democracy and upholding the rule of law, Nigeria would be championing the reversal of democratic gains, which were the legacy achievements of the Jonathan government.
Please share this and bring the world’s attention to the drifting pace of Nigeria’s democracy. It could have been anyone of us.
