LAGOS, Nigeria – Two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Nigeria for the overwhelming “energy, generosity, and kindness” shown to him during his stay in the country as he prepares for his next fight.
The British-Nigerian fighter, who has been in Nigeria for a period of rehabilitation following an injury, took to Instagram to share his gratitude with fans.
In a post that many interpreted as a farewell message before returning to the UK, Joshua wrote: “Nigeria, thank you for your energy, generosity & kindness.”
Joshua’s visit to Nigeria was marked by several memorable moments that captured the attention of fans and the media.
His viral street-side haircut, spontaneous interactions with locals, and warm reception in his ancestral hometown of Sagamu were highlights of his time in the country.
Joshua, born to a Nigerian mother and a half-Nigeria, half-Irish father, proudly embraces his heritage, often showcasing his deep connection to Nigeria through his actions and his tattoo of Africa on his shoulder, prominently outlining Nigeria’s borders.
One of the key events during his stay was his attendance at the birthday celebration of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.
Joshua mingled with Nigerian billionaires and further endeared himself to the public with a viral encounter involving his chef, who prepares his meals.
As Joshua heads back to England, he does so with the intention of resuming his boxing career following his recovery from an injury sustained after his fifth-round knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently hinted that Joshua could be entering the final year of his professional boxing career.
“This is the final year. Let’s not beat around the bush,” Hearn said to Sky Sports. “He’s going to have somewhere between – it could always be your last fight – but one and three fights, that’s the reality of the situation.”
In the world of heavyweight boxing, Joshua’s return has sparked much anticipation.
Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, who is in the midst of his own comeback, expressed interest in facing Joshua in what could be a blockbuster clash in 2026.
Wilder, despite a recent rough patch, sees a fight with Joshua as a potential highlight of his career.
