AWKA, Nigeria – In a tragic continuation of violence against community leaders in Anambra State, Cajetan Nwokike, a former President-General of the Amansea Development Union, was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 11, 2024, morning in Amansea, Awka South Local Government Area, marking yet another assassination in the state in recent months.
Chief Nwokike was attacked in his own home during his customary morning ritual of breaking the kola nut.
According to Omife I. Omife, the National President of the Association of Past Presidents’ General of Anambra State (APPAS), two young men entered Nwokike’s residence and shot him at point-blank range, leading to his immediate death.
“The community is reeling from the loss of another esteemed leader, emphasizing the urgent need for swift and decisive action to bring the culprits to justice and restore peace to the state,” said Omife in a statement issued on Friday, April 12, 2024.
This murder follows closely on the heels of the assassination of Chief Silas Onyima, the President-General of Umuoji, less than two months ago.
APPAS has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo and law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts to apprehend those responsible for these heinous acts.
The community and its leaders are calling for increased security measures and a thorough investigation to ensure that this pattern of targeted killings is brought to an end.
