SLIDESHOW: Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh: The Heroine And Patriot
Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh was the doctor who identified and contained the index Ebola patient in Nigeria in July 2014. She was the lead physician and endocrinologist at a family clinic and had never seen Ebola before, but was able to correctly diagnose Ebola and resist the pressure she received to release the patient before the diagnosis was confirmed. However, because the Nigerian health system was not prepared for an Ebola outbreak at the time, she contracted Ebola and died. As a result of her keen perception, courage, and steadfastness, all subsequent Ebola cases in Nigeria could be traced to a single path of transmission originating with the index case. This is what differentiated the outbreak in Nigeria from the ongoing, growing outbreaks in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Largely due to her efforts, Nigeria was declared Ebola-free on 20 October 2014.
