AWKA, Nigeria – Traditional worshippers in Anambra State, under the umbrella of the Nzuko Odinani Welfare Association (NOWA), have called on the state government to reconsider its ban on water sacrifices, a practice they describe as fundamental to Igbo spiritual worship.
The appeal follows the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, which prohibits water sacrifices and imposes penalties of a N20 million fine, six years imprisonment, or both for violators.
During a meeting with state government officials in Awka on Friday, March 21, 2025, NOWA President-General, Nze Ezeafor Izuegbu, and Secretary-General, Nze Dike Ugbaja, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his efforts to enhance security but urged him to revisit the ban.
“Water sacrifice is a key aspect of Igbo spiritual practices. It has been in existence since the time of our forefathers, and without these sacrifices, we cannot perform our spiritual duties,” they stated.
The association proposed a compromise, suggesting that the government designate specific sections of streams for sacrifices while implementing periodic clean-up initiatives to maintain environmental hygiene.
“Water is life. If the state government stops this practice, it is taking life away from us,” they added.
NOWA also raised concerns about alleged intimidation of traditional worshippers by security operatives and community leaders, calling for government intervention.
The group pledged to support the state’s environmental sustainability efforts and promised to identify and expel unethical practitioners within their ranks.
In response, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, clarified that Governor Soludo has not banned traditional religious practices.
“The governor’s primary concern is to keep Anambra’s water bodies clean and safe for both residents and tourists. Traditional religion should be practiced in a responsible manner,” he said.
Onyenji expressed appreciation for the association’s willingness to collaborate with the government on environmental initiatives.
He emphasized the importance of balancing cultural preservation with public health and environmental sustainability.
