AGUATA, Nigeria – The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that it has taken control of the scene following an attack on a vigilante office in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area, by gunmen on Friday, April 25, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the attack took place late on Friday night when armed assailants attempted to force their way into the facility.

The security operatives present at the scene resisted the attackers, which led to a gun battle.

The confrontation resulted in the burning of four patrol vehicles and two motorcycles, but reports indicating a death during the incident were refuted by Ikenga, who stated that no lives were lost.

“Contrary to reports, there were no fatalities during the incident. The situation has since been brought under control,” Ikenga said, adding that the Joint Security Force is continuing its offensive operations in the area to remove criminal elements.

Calm has reportedly been restored in the locality, with authorities assuring the public that the situation is being closely monitored. Further updates will be provided as developments unfold.

This attack marks the latest in a series of similar incidents in Anambra State.

In the past, security facilities in Nnewi South and other areas of the state have also been targeted by gunmen.

Notably, in November 2024, gunmen attacked operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group along the Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area, resulting in one vigilante member sustaining injuries and their operational vehicle being set ablaze.
