Amina Mohammed, Nigeria’s environment minister, is set to ditch her position on the federal cabinet and return to the UN, as a deputy secretary general.
According to Premium Times, an official statement from the United Nations is expected to confirm Ms. Mohammed’s new appointment.
Ms. Mohammed was appointed minister by President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2015.
She is expected to be the deputy to Antonio Guterres, who will assume office as secretary general of the world body on January 1, 2017.
Ms. Mohammed had formerly served as an adviser to the outgoing UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, a position she held before accepting to serve on President Buhari’s cabinet.
