TEL AVIV, Israel – In a surprising joint announcement, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Unity Party leader Benny Gantz have declared the formation of an emergency government and a “war management cabinet”.
This decision comes amid escalating tensions in the region.
The collaborative statement by Netanyahu and Gantz on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, revealed that the new war management cabinet would comprise Netanyahu, Gantz, and the current defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
Benny Gantz, who has previously held the position of defense minister, brings his experience and expertise to this crucial cabinet.
Significantly, this emergency government will strictly limit its legislative activities.
According to the joint statement, the government will only “pass laws or make decisions concerning the conduct of the war.”
This condition indicates a halt to other potential legislative actions, notably the contentious judicial overhaul, which has been a topic of considerable debate in the country.
However, the formation of this emergency government does not currently include participation from all factions.
As of now, there’s no indication that opposition leader Yair Lapid and his Yesh Atid party will be joining this unified government.
