The government of Akwa Ibom has trained 2,000 farmers on production, processing, branding and marketing of poultry produce under a Central Bank of Nigeria assisted programme as part of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s thrust to increase employment opportunities and boost the state’s agricultural industry.
Matthew Ekaete, the state’s commission of agriculture and natural resources disclosed this information to the press at the an event at the Le-sien Event Centre in Uyo, the state’s capital.
The commissioner said that the Akwa Ibom State government is supporting farmers in the state with a view of salvaging the state from the economic recession in Nigeria. The programme equips the farmers with modern farming.
“We are considering even more programmes in that sector because Governor Emmanuel wants to make agriculture a mainstay of our economy,” Mr. Ekaete said.
“Agriculture is not meant for everybody; one must actually know how to do the business, so we need to build their capacities to make them experience maximum yields.
“You don’t just start investment; you must add value to our farmers, build their capacities and encourage them.
“The farmers must know the business ethics and how to handle situations that may arise,” he said.
