UYO, Nigeria — Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has appointed his daughter, Helen Eno Obareki, as the new First Lady of the state following the passing of his wife, Pastor Patience Umo Eno.

The governor’s wife died recently after an illness, leaving behind a legacy of service, including her notable Golden Initiative For All (GIFA) project.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, praised Helen Eno Obareki’s appointment and visited the family to offer her condolences.

During the visit, Senator Tinubu lauded the governor’s decision, saying it reflected practices seen in the United States and honoured the late First Lady’s legacy by ensuring her projects would continue.

“We are all Nigerians, and I want to thank God for Patience’s life. Though short, she completed her race. May God comfort you, your family, and your children. I will always be here for you,” Tinubu said, offering her full support for Helen’s new role.

Governor Reflects on Deep Bond with Late Wife

In a heartfelt speech, Governor Eno reminisced about his deep connection with his late wife, Patience, whom he married at a young age.

“I married her when she was 19, and I was 22. She was my embodiment of the biblical virtuous woman, my greatest supporter, and my toughest critic,” the governor declared said.

“Her absence will be felt for the rest of my life.”

He introduced their daughter, Helen, to the role of First Lady, stating that she would continue her mother’s work and collaborate with the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.

A Commitment to Continuing Her Mother’s Legacy

Helen’s appointment involves overseeing the ongoing projects initiated by her late mother, particularly those aimed at women’s welfare and social development through the First Lady’s Office.

Governor Eno expressed full confidence in his daughter and pledged to support her in maintaining the values and vision of her late mother.

Senator Tinubu encouraged Helen, saying, “I know you well, and I believe God will guide you. You will accomplish even more than your mother, and He will grant you good health.”

Addressing Rumours of Remarriage

Governor Eno also addressed rumours circulating about the possibility of him taking a second wife, humorously dismissing the idea during a separate condolence visit by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

“I’m not considering remarrying anytime soon,” he said, adding jokingly, “I don’t have the money to pay another bride price.”

He emphasised that the void left by his late wife was irreplaceable, but Helen’s role would ensure that her mother’s legacy continues.

“Her legacy will live on in our hearts, and I’m confident that Helen will carry forward the work she started.”
