PORTO-NOVO, Benin – Gernot Rohr, immediate past Super Eagles manager and current coach of Benin Republic’s national football team, has shared intriguing anecdotes about his experiences as a European coach in Africa.
From ‘bewitched’ towels to unanticipated appearances of government officials, his journey reveals a glimpse into the captivating world of African football.
In a recent interview with FCBayern.com on Friday, June 30, 2023, the Franco-German tactician narrated an incident during his first game as the coach of the Benin national team against Rwanda.
“In my first game with Benin against Rwanda, the ball just wouldn’t go in. Suddenly, a fan ran onto the pitch, grabbed the goalkeeper’s white towel, and disappeared with it. My assistant explained to me that the towel had bewitched us. And sure enough, five minutes later, we scored the equaliser,” Rohr recounted.
This captivating episode reveals the deep-rooted beliefs in mysticism and the unexpected charms of African football culture.
However, the surprises did not stop there.
Rohr, a former Bordeaux defender, shared another bewildering experience from his tenure with the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles.
“Two years ago in Nigeria, suddenly the Minister of Sports turned up at training with 40 to 50 journalists and wanted to join in the football. I was perplexed. My assistant said we had to let him join in; otherwise, we’d all be gone tomorrow. Without further ado, we added a circle game for him, and everything was fine,” he elaborated.
This incident illustrates the close-knit and, at times, perplexing relationships between politics, media, and sports in the African football landscape.
The sudden appearance of a government minister during a training session is certainly unconventional by European standards, but it demonstrates the importance of adaptability and cultural sensitivity for foreign coaches working in different environments.
Gernot Rohr’s anecdotes offer a window into the rich tapestry of African football, showcasing a blend of tradition, belief, and the occasional unpredictable element.
These experiences, though bewildering, underline the passion and commitment to the beautiful game that transcends borders and cultures.
