ADAMAWA, Nigeria — The government of Adamawa State has hailed the arrest of suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, as a key stride towards justice, according to a statement released on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has described the arrest as a “major relief,” underscoring the inevitability of justice catching up with individuals implicated in criminal activities.
“The long arm of the law will always catch up with a felon,” Governor Fintiri said in the statement, signed by the Director General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mr. Solomon Kumangar.
The statement further accuses Yunusa-Ari of inciting discord, spreading misinformation, and propagating half-truths while evading law enforcement. This behavior, according to the government, traces back to the events of April 16, 2023, when Yunusa-Ari allegedly attempted to manipulate electoral outcomes in Adamawa State through a ‘civilian coup.’
“Our demands have always been for justice to run its full course and for everyone involved in the false declaration of the winner of the state governorship election to face the full wrath of the law,” the statement reads.
The government views the arrest of Yunusa-Ari as a crucial initial step in upholding the sanctity of the electoral law and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The statement concludes with a hopeful sentiment towards a brighter future for Nigeria, urging police and relevant investigating agencies to ensure due diligence in the prosecution of the case against Yunusa-Ari.
“We hope that a new Nigeria is possible and welcome the arrest of Hudu,” the government said. “We ask the police and all relevant investigating agencies to ensure due diligence in the prosecution of this case to its logical conclusion.”
