UMUAHIA, Nigeria — The political landscape in Abia State took a dramatic turn on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, as members of the House of Assembly impeached their speaker, Hon Chinedum Orji, in a surprise move.
With 18 of the 24 members signing for the speaker’s impeachment, the majority has spoken, signaling a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics.
Four members, Ginger Onwusibe, Solomon Akpulonu, Munachim Alozie, and Kelechi Onuzuruike, notably declined to sign the impeachment document, reflecting a divided House. The motion to remove Orji was moved by Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, representing Umuahia East, and seconded by Hon. Okey Igwe of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), representing Umunneochi.
In a statement, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo said, “The decision to impeach the Speaker was made in the best interest of the people of Abia State. It’s time for new leadership to steer us forward and address our community’s pressing issues.”
His sentiment was echoed by Hon. Okey Igwe, who added, “We must put the needs of our constituents first and ensure that their voices are heard.”
The impeachment of Hon Chinedum Orji has sent shockwaves through Abia State’s political circles, as the House now faces the challenge of electing a new speaker who can unite the members and navigate the complex political landscape.
The coming days and weeks will reveal the true impact of this bold move on the state’s future direction.
