7 Students Killed, 25 Injured In Girls School Dormitory Fire In Kano

A school dormitory inferno left seven students dead and 25 others injured on Sunday night, November 29, 2015.

The sad incident occurred in the hostel of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Jogana in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Kano State Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, confirmed the incident and the tragic deaths.

He said he had already visited the scene of the tragedy and the hospitals where the survivors werereceiving treatment.

He conveyed the government’s condolences to the families of the victims, assuring them that government would cater for the medical bills of the affected students.

Abubakar, who doubles as the state Commissioner for Education, ordered the immediate closure of the school to enable the students and parents manage the trauma of the tragic incident.

He said a technical committee would be set up to identify the immediate and remote causes of the fire as well as advise government on the best means of repairing the hostel.

The deputy governor commended the community where the school is sited for its assistance during the fire outbreak and acknowledged the contributions of companies in the area for providing fire fighting equipment to help put out the fire.
