Tragic Inferno: 7 Dead, 14 Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident

ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – A devastating accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway claimed the lives of seven people and left 14 others injured on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

The accident occurred around OPIC, with Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirming the tragic event.

Okpe revealed that the incident, which took place at 10:45 am, was caused by excessive speeding and brake failure, leading to a loss of control.

The vehicle involved, a Mazda bus with registration number BDG 993 YG, hit the road divider, somersaulted, and burst into flames. Among the 22 passengers involved in the accident were seven men, eight women, four male children, and three female children.

The FRSC spokesperson detailed that the 14 injured individuals included four men, five women, two male children, and three female children. Those who lost their lives in the accident were two men, three women, and two children.

Okpe explained that the injured were taken to the Lagos State Accident Emergency Center in Ojota, while the deceased were transported to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Morgue in Sagamu.

Offering condolences to the victims’ families, Okpe also urged motorists to avoid speeding and to regularly check their vehicles for maintenance and replacement of any defects.
