LAGOS, Nigeria – A Sabo Yaba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of five men on Friday, May 5, 2023, for allegedly killing a police officer.

The defendants, Shakiru Shittu, 48, Kadir Shonoki, 38, Shadiku Adeola, 43, Taofeek Aluko, 38, and Adekunle Onasanya, 37, face a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

Chief Magistrate Peter Nwaka did not take the pleas of the defendants and ordered the case file to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. He adjourned the case to May 31 for mention.

Prosecutor Good Friday informed the court that the defendants committed the offenses on April 6 at Emuren Junction, Ikorodu, Lagos.

According to Friday, the defendants killed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mathew Aniaguru, who was on official duty.

ASP Aniaguru, a Divisional Police Officer at Imota, received a distress call from ASP Adamu Audu, who reported that gunmen were attacking them at Emuren Junction.

The defendants allegedly shot and killed the officer and took his AK-47 rifle with 10 rounds of ammunition.

Friday said that the police later raided and arrested the defendants. He requested the court grant the police 30 days to conduct further investigations.
