When Grandpa believes in you

We already know just how popular football is in the UK, but what most of us might not really be aware of is just how far people are willing to go for the sake of the sports.

When Harry Wilson was born, grandpa Peter Edwards was so sure his grandson would one day play for the Wales national team that he wagered 50 GBP ($67).

While nobody believed him, the bookmakers thought it was a long-shot, at least that was the story the odds at 2,500-1 tells.

Well, as it turns out on Oct. 15th 2013, Harry who was 16-year-old at the time was invited to the national team, and at the 87th minute he became the youngest player ever to feature for the Wales national team playing against Belgium in a World Cup qualifier.

Not only did he make history that day, he also won his grandpa a nice sweet sum of 150, 000 GBP on his 13-year-old bet.

Dad’s future bet

While watching young Lewis Hamilton race his son Evan at a go-karting track back in 1998, Richard Hopkins had a rare moment of insight into the future. He was convinced Hamilton will become a super-star car racing.

To back up his conviction, he placed three separate bets on the rising racing star. The first was a $270 bet that Hamilton would win the Formula 1 before turning 23, and a 100 pounds wager he would become world champion by 25 and a final bet of 50 pounds that Hamilton would achieve both.

In 2007, Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix which means Hopkins became 40,000 pounds richer. Winning the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix means Hopkins bagged additional 50,000 pounds and the third bet made him additional 75, 000 pounds.

Interestingly, since his breakout on the world stage, Hamilton has consistently posted as a favorite to become champion. The latest odds for Drivers Championship winner 2020 on Unibet show Hamilton as fans and bookmakers favorite to finish top five.

Charles Barkley’s incredibly Super Bowl win

NBA legend and sports announcer, Charles Barkley has made his mar both on the field and off the pitch.

Barkley has over the years accumulated quite a string of losses that amounted to at the last count $30 million. However, it wasn’t the losses that had made the headlines but his winning in the Super Bowl 36.

Barkley placed $500,000 bet on the underdog New England Patriots to beat St. Louis Rams and a further $50,000 on the money line. He won both bets.

However, problems started when the sportsbook refused to payout his winnings citing a tiny matter of not having enough credit on his account at Mandalay Bay to cover his bet and also not signing a marker as guarantee.

Eventually, the sportsbook reluctantly paid out, giving Barkley a windfall of $800,000 in winnings.

Mayweather still undefeated

While inside the boxing ring, Floyd Mayweather has never lost a competitive boxing match, it appears he is replicating his form on the betting scene.

Known for his massive bets – you know like go big or go home – he’s also known to have won jaw-dropping jackpots.

He biggest winning was back in 2014 when he backed the Denver Broncos to beat the New York Jets by 7.5 points spread. A touch down by the Broncos put them 14 points clear of the necessary points.
