COLORADO, USA – In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Andrea Serrano, 31, was sentenced on Thursday, May 18, 2023, to 90 days in prison for sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy.
The sentence, many argue, belies the severity of her actions, which included bearing a child by the underage victim.
Serrano’s sentence does not include the seven days she had already served, and her impending imprisonment will commence next week, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The Fountain Police Department began investigating Serrano after receiving a tip about her illegal activities on June 27, 2022. She was subsequently arrested in July and confessed to the crime.
The sentencing has provoked outrage from the victim’s family and local community members who had opposed the initial plea deal offered to Serrano.
The deal entailed Serrano serving “ten years to life” on a “sex offender intensive supervised probation” but allowed her to avoid jail time entirely.
The mother of the young boy expressed her frustration and disappointment with the court’s decision, emphasizing the devastating impact of the abuse on her son’s life.
“I feel like my son is robbed of his childhood. Now he’s having to be a father. He’s a victim, and he’s going to have to live with that for the rest of his life,” she said.
She further condemned the court for what she sees as a double standard in the treatment of male and female sex offenders.
“I feel like if she was a man, and he was a little girl, it would definitely be different.
They would be seeking more. I feel like because he is not a woman, they are not. They are having compassion for her,” she added.
Serrano initially faced two charges, one for “sexual assault against a child” and a second for “sexual assault against a child under the age of 15 by one in a position of trust.”
However, she pled guilty to a charge of incest in February.
In an apparent show of remorse during the sentencing, Serrano expressed a desire to apologize to the victim, his family, her family, and her children.
It remains to be seen whether her words will hold any consolation for those affected by her actions, especially given the broader dissatisfaction with her sentencing.
