Three persons have been confirmed dead in a tanker explosion that occurred near the Koko junction section of the Benin-Sapele Expressway, Ethiope West Council Area of Delta State on Wednesday, July 22, 2020.
Onome Onowakpoyeya, the Delta State Police spokesperson, who confirmed the incident to journalists said the three persons were burned beyond recognition on the spot.
According to him, Two cars were burned together with three motorcycles in the unfortunate incident that happened around 8 am.
“The driver of the truck was trying to maneuver a bad spot when it fell.
“The truck exploded when residents of the area rushed to the scene to scoop fuel,” he said.
He also said that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and security agencies were at the scene to assist in evacuating the corpses and rushed other injured persons to a hospital in Oghara community.
”The incident caused heavy traffic but the mobile policemen were there to control the traffic,” he added.
Also, a source who spoke to journalists said the driver of the tanker had gone to report the incident about the residents scooping fuel at the Police checkpoint in Koko junction when they heard the explosion.
The source said the victims, though unidentified, included a man and a woman.
“I don’t know the number of persons that died because we were not allowed close to the place. A car got burnt. The tanker got burnt too,” the source added.
