Kunle Abati, a 29-year-old man, has been arrested by the police in Ogun State for allegedly raping a 27-year-old lady with down syndrome.
The suspect was arrested on December 7, following a report lodged at the Ilese Ijebu divisional headquarters by the victim’s mother.
The mother was said to have reported to the police that she had sent her daughter on an errand at about 7:30 am of the said day, saying she discovered bloodstains on her clothes when she returned home.
According to a statement by the Ogun police image maker, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the mother said when she asked her daughter about the blood on her dress, the victim took her to the suspect’s house, explaining that the suspect had carnal knowledge of her.
Upon the report, Oyeyemi said the DPO of Ilese Ijebu, CSP Paul Omiwole, detailed his men to go after the suspect, and he was apprehended.
“On interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing the crime, adding that he equally capitalized on the health challenge of the lady to do what he did, only for him to discover that she was a virgin,” Oyeyemi stated on Saturday.
He said the ‘bleeding victim’ was quickly taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State CIID for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
SAD: ‘Out Of 11,000 Cases, Nigeria Has Recorded Only 33 Rape Convictions’ – Minister Says
Pauline Tallen, the minister of women’s affairs, on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, said over 11,000 rape cases had been recorded in Nigeria with only 33 culprits convicted.
The minister said 401 of the cases were fatal cases; while 592 close and 3507 open.
She spoke in Abuja on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the orange ceremony and lighting of the UN house, which took place in commemoration of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
She said harmful cultural stereotypes, failures of law enforcement to investigate rape cases, toxic misogyny, and insufficient support for survivors had created a culture of silence and impunity that continued to fail hundreds of women and girls every year.
“Concrete actions have not been taken to tackle the rape crisis in Nigeria with the seriousness it deserves. Women and girls continue to be failed by a system that makes it increasingly difficult for survivors to get justice, while allowing perpetrators to get away with gross human rights violations,” she said.
