Bukola Saraki, the president of the Nigerian Senate, and speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, met with the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu in Abuja.

The meeting with the NASS leadership was to discuss the funding of the 2019 general elections and the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The Senate President had on Monday convened a meeting with the INEC boss to hold on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, which was later postponed, following the siege that was laid to the National Assembly by officers of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Saraki in his meeting with the INEC boss today questioned why the request for funds is coming to the National Assembly nearly three weeks and not a few months ago.

He (Saraki) said that the National Assembly is committed to ensuring that the election is held without hitches.

The Senate President also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

President Buhari had in July 2018 said that the 2019 general election will cost about 242.4 billion Naira.

He said in a letter sent to the National Assembly, that the funds be drawn from the 2018 and 2019 budgets.
