About four members of the Ebonyi State Executive Council (SEC) on Monday, october 20, 2014 resigned their positions in order to contest for various political positions ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Vanguard reports that those who resigned include: commissioners for information and state orientation, Chike Onwe; commerce and tourism, Hyacinth Ikpor and cement production, Sunday Ugwuocha. The special adviser to the governor on petroleum product, pricing and distribution, Chidi Ejem was also said to have tendered his resignation. All four were said to have tendered their resignation letters to the office of the secretary to the state government, Fidelis Mbam as governor Martin Elechi was not on seat.
Reports gathered also have it that several other ministers were hotting up to resign, pending the return of governor Elechi, whop was expected back in the state on Monday, October 20, 2014.
The resignation of Ikpor, the commissioner for commerce and tourism has caused some concern as he is thought to be running for governor of the state, a position which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other stakeholders in the state have “given” to the outgoing minister of health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, with both men being natives of Afikpo North local government area in Ebonyi south senatorial district.
The commissioner for information and state orientation, Dr. Onwe, is reportedly having ambitions to contest to represent Ezza south/Ikwo federal constituency at the federal house of assembly, a position currently held by Tobias Okwuru.
