About 16 political parties have asked for the postponement of the general election by six weeks, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have revealed.
About 28 political parties met with INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega in Abuja on Saturday, February 7, 2015.
INEC’s Secretary General of the Inter Party Advisory Council, Peter Ameh availed that some of the parties that called for a shift in the election date are: United Democratic Party, the Citizen Peoples Party, the Peoples Party of Nigeria, Action Alliance, Peoples Democratic Congress, Labour Party, Unity Party of Nigeria, Alliance for Democracy, Democratic Peoples Party, the New Nigerian Peoples Party and the Independent Democrat.
Ameh further revealed that nine political parties insisted that the elections hold as already planned, while two unnamed parties were indifferent.
Addressing the political parties at the meeting, Jega said: “The main purpose of calling for this meeting is to update you on our preparation for the 2015 general election, and in particular draw your attention to some new developments as to how the commission should address this new development.
The INEC chairman will make a formal announcement soon.
