A new misfortune was averted on Sunday, March 2, 2014 when a girls’ hostel housing 119 students in the Federal Government Girls College Umuahia, was razed by fire. No life was lost in the fire however.
It was gathered that the fire incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Sunday while the students were in their classrooms observing their night prep.
It was the second fire incident in the school in less than three months. On December 9, 2013 the school had lost a hostel housing 79 students four days before the end of the school session.
Acting principal of the school, Mr. Ernest Chukwuka lamented the fire incident just as the school was putting finishing touches to the hostel which was burnt last December.
The timely intervention of the state fire service reportedly prevented the fire from spreading to other hostels.
