President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said that clean mind, good character, clear conscience and good record of service have made the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, to enjoy longevity.
The president joined other well-wishers at the Monatan residence of the monarch to congratulate him on his centenary birthday.
On the entourage of the President were the Senate President, Senator David Mark, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, Deputy Senate Whip, Hosea Agboola, Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, former Governor of Oyo State, former Senate leader, Teslim Folarin, Minister of State, FCT, Mrs. Jumoke Akinjide and others.
When he arrived the residence of the monarch, some High Chiefs were initially prevented from gaining entry into the living room as security men took over the whole compound.
President Jonathan apologised for not being able to come on Monday as a result of the Nyaya bomb blast.
Though, he was represented by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, he said he would have wished to be there personally if not for the unfortunate incident.
While praying for more prosperous years ahead, he
said his representative at the thanksgiving service on Monday had delivered his birthday message.
He described Olubadan as a very unique monarch being one of the very few around who were born when the Northern and Southern Protectorates were amalgamated.
Jonathan and his entourage sang for the celebrant and thereafter cut the birthday cake.
Earlier in his welcome address, Otun Olubadan, Omowale Kuye, who spoke on behalf of Olubadan commended the President for the visit saying being the first person to occupy the presidential seat from the minority zone of the country, he had done the right thing by the approval he gave for the ongoing National Conference which he said “is what the country needs presently”.
