Supporting the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), over 100 African-American pastors and leaders gathered at the First Baptist World Changers International Church in Detroit, Michigan to voice their disapproval of what they believe as the government’s aim to take away their voting rights.
The Christian leaders and pastors stated in a press conference that they will no longer be silent on the issue of gay marriages and they plan to lead a peaceful march to the courthouse of the city to protest their opposition to the gay community’s attempts to overturn their vote in court.
Burnette Inspirational Ministries’, Rev. Roland A. Caldwell, said that the time has come for Christians all over the country to stand together and fight for their rights for religious freedom. He added that they would show the government that they would no longer stand for their threats against their voting rights with praise and worship to God during their march.
Stacy Swimp, founder of Revive Alive ministries, Flint, Michigan, said that God established the institution of marriage to ensure the continuation and happiness of the human race and no amount of legalization, could change that fact. He added that the redefinition of DOMA was a deliberate act of defiance against God’s law as well as an attempt to disrupt the traditionalAmerican family.
Speaking about the recent trial by U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman in Detroit, who will decide if the voter-passed DOMA violates the Constitution, Swimp said, that their stand outside the courthouse will show the judge what the voters of Detroit supported. He added that 59% of the voters supported DOMA and you could not overrule a majority decision.
Life Changers International Ministries’, Rev. Stacey Foster also stated that he believes it to be the duty of Christians to stand up for their rights, not only for themselves, but for the nation as a whole. He added that the spiritual corruption in the churches by agreeing and supporting the whims of the government and the homos*xual community must stop.
Foster went on to say that the only way the church could be restored to their former beliefs was if every Christian stood up for what they held dear. He added that the coalition of pastors was calling on Christians around the nation, especially those in Michigan, to support their peaceful march on the courthouse.
