10 Killed, 7 Injured As Copper Mine Dump Collapses In Zambia

Must read

Ten people were killed and seven injured when the dump site of a copper mine collapsed in Central Zambia, police and hospital officials said on Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

The dead were mining illegally on the dump site of the Black mountain mine in the town of Kitwe when nearby excavators caused vibrations that led to the collapse of parts of the dump, local police chief Charity Katanga said in a statement.

“We have ten brought in dead and seven injured. We are yet to identify them,’’ said Katanga.

The search for people was completed and all bodies have been recovered, according to the police chief.

Zambia is one of Africa’s biggest copper producers, and illegal mining activity is rife among poor communities in mining areas.
