The University of Southern California’s master in gerontology department has released an infographic that states that one in ten girls born today will live past 100. One in twenty boys will also live to reach 100.
This is a huge increase in life expectancy when you consider that most babies born in 1900 did not live to reach the age of 50.
Today’s retired people are much better off than in years past – this could be one of the reasons for the life expectancy increase. In 1970, 25% of retired adults lived below the poverty line.
However, by 2005, this figure had dropped to 10%. Most retired people also have good access to healthcare, and a better diet than they did in the past. These factors and more are what has led to the better statistics.
